Eastern Long-necked Turtle (Chelodina longicollis) – Melbourne Zoo
At this time of year, the turtles crowd onto every available surface in the Pelican’s Lagoon at Melbourne Zoo to sun bake and warm up. I’m pretty sure these are the Eastern Long-necked turtles, but don’t hesitate to let me know if I’ve got the wrong name.
I shot this photo about 3 weeks ago when I last visited Melbourne Zoo.
I used to be able to see them digging nests on bare patches of land in the Royal Botanic Gardens, but now the reeds & grasses have grown high, I rarely see them at all in the RBG – just the occasional head popping out of the water in the large Ornamental Lake.
