Lunch for One……………under a cool, dark archway next to St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne’s CBD

In the previous post, I missed sharing my favourite shot of the day.

I like Black & White images that are dark & moody.  I like a hint of light outlining the subject.

Besides, I had my 18-200mm lens on by this time near the end of my walk, was standing on the other side of the narrow street and the outline was all I could see with the telephoto zoomed in as far as it would go under the Cathedral building office block archway.

(I must admit this shot looks better on my large 27″ photo editing screen than on my 11″ Mac Pro – hope you can see it ok).

    • Glad you enjoyed the image, Gary.
One of those photos where you’re not exactly sure who you’ve photographed from the street position, but knowing that there’s a mystery and stillness that leaves you wondering.

  1. Nice B&W images, Vicki. I like the one with the guys in the alleyway going to the truck. Glad you changed to color for the very colorful street art though. Lovely! good that the heat wave is over. We are going into Springer here. Tha’s like Summer, but Spring!

    • Thanks Steve.
I have got a few of the Street Art shots in B & W, but they lose a lot of impact without the colour.

I’ve got my fingers well & truly crossed that this is the end of the stifling heat and we get some true Autumn days next week. Don’t think I could take another summer of high temps. like we’ve had recently. I’ve done almost nothing productive and certainly haven’t been out to take photos (let alone spend time on the computer) for nearly 10 days.

  2. Its fantastic Victoria… I Have a new large screen too now ~ i Mac — i think 23 inches and can see all the detail and contrast beautifully. Lots of mood here… and the background view of the stairs and depth there is wonderful… Great work my friend – you are so talented!! x Robyn

    • Thankyou Robyn. I have looked at the Mac large screens (mine is a 27″ Dell high resolution 1920 x 1080 which my brother bought for me). I found the Mac high gloss screen a bit distracting in the shops. How are you finding it? Do you find yourself reflected in the high gloss screen like a mirror? A few reviews I read on the internet suggested that.

I’m wondering whether to wait until Apple bring out a large ‘retina’ screen with the 224 ppi like my little 11″ Mac Pro’s screen. I think my 27″ Dell monitor is only 109 ppi.

Hope you’re settling in back home after your 6 wk trip. Vicki xo

      • hmm- i have not noticed any type of reflection as you mention Victoria — I wonder which model I have here… know it’s the latest/greatest of the i Mac population… Here is the specs on Graphics – not sure on th pip – but Built-in I mac display
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB ~ photos are amazing to look at on this thing… really what sold me in the store… It’s 21.5 inches. Let me know if I can get you any more info… very happy with it!! xo

    • Thanks for the info Robyn – I’ll check it out online to see if you’ve given me the info I need. You know me – too technology challenged to understand all the tech language.
Want to get a large Mac screen for photo editing (now I’ve got all Apple Mac equipment) and return the Dell screen to my brother. I only ever bought the 11″ size Mac Pro to ensure I could access emails while my desktop was supposedly being fixed. When I decided the Windows desktop was not worth fixing, I made a decision to go ‘all Mac’. Glad I did, but my eyesight is too poor to do photo editing on a small monitor. I really need the very best monitor I can possibly afford.

    • Yes Mark. I swapped from the 50mm prime lens in Chinatown to the 18-200 telephoto when I got further downtown yesterday. I love my 18-200mm. When you have eyesight & physical mobility issues like I do, a good zoom goes a long way. Wish I had bought that first in Jan 2011 instead of the 100mm Macro lens (which I hardly ever use these days).

  3. A wonderful photographs with a subtle atmosphere. I do love the contrast between the foreground and the background and how all the details come out with just a touch of light. Well captured and composed, and the black and white enhances the mood in the picture.

    • Thankyou for the lovely comment Otto.
A great comment from a professional photographer like yourself, is high praise indeed.

I have to admit I really like this shot myself. I’d like to be able to capture B & W like this ALL the time, but as you would know, it’s often about being in the right place at the right time. I took a similar shot in this spot over a year ago, but the light & outline wasn’t as good as this one.

  4. The B&W turned out great!
I just got a new MacBook Pro laptop with upgraded memory. This little machine is fast and I love it! I’ve had such good luck with Apple products so far, including my previous older and smaller macbook, that I haven’t used my PC in at least a couple of years now.

    • Thank you.
I think the Mac Pro is amazing too. I glad I bought it although sometimes I wish I had waited til I had more money & bought the larger one. I think I’ll need more memory soon too. I’ve still got the Dell 27″ screen for photo editing which my brother had bought me last year, but I think I’ll eventually upgrade that to the Apple large screen too.
I can’t believe how fast it is in comparison to my old desktop (which was a pretty old one which my brother lent me 4 years ago).
