Maybe next time………..

I know I promised you a shot of the new baby elephant next time I went to the Zoo, but I’m sorry to say that “Baby E”, who has yet to be named, was having his afternoon nap on Saturday when I got to the Thai Elephant Village at the Zoo.  Born on the 17th January here http://www.zoo.org.au/news/special-video—meet-melbourne-zoos-new-baby-elephant , I never thought to check the viewing times before I left home that morning.

The sign near the first elephant paddock informed me that he would be on show with all the other Elephants late morning for a short hour or so, OR between 2.00pm and 3.00pm.

I arrived at the Thai Elephant paddocks at 3.15pm, so just missed out on a view.  I crept between the crowd at the indoor Elephant Barn and quickly took a few shots.

I promise I will try to make some better photos to share next time.   In the meantime, here’s a very tiny glimpse.  He’s about the size of a small cow (or should I say Shetland pony?), and has got the cutest wee trunk you’ve ever seen in your life.  His cuteness is only improved by a tiny smiling rosebud mouth when asleep.

Wow, he’s adorable.

IMG_6461This baby is so tiny, you’d think the adult elephants would trample him, but he’s well taken care of by his doting Aunts and mother, Num-Oi.

    • Next Zoo visit, I hope I’ll remember to double check Baby Elephant’s viewing times. Baby E. looks just like a toy – he’s amazing, Julie.
School term starts on Tuesday, so I’ll try to time my visit on a weekday when I hope there’s not too many visitors, or school children, and I can get a clear shot. Trouble is that the elephants stand on the other side of the main paddock (there are 3 paddocks), so it might be a bit far away for my telephoto lens – we’ll see how I manage on the day.

    • If I can get a photo of him outside with the rest of the adult & teenager elephants, you’ll be surprised as how small he is in comparison. I just hope my telephoto lens will be long enough.
