Announcement from Zoos Victoria !

One of our elephants has just had a baby boy overnight according to an email from Zoos Victoria.

Hope to bring you all a photo of the newest addition some time in the coming weeks.

PS. HERE’S THE ACTUAL ANNOUNCEMENT….

Melbourne Zoo’s Asian Elephant Num-Oi has given birth overnight.

Her 22-month pregnancy concluded at 2:50am with the birth of a little boy.

Num-Oi was outdoors in the company of Kulab and her two-year-old calf Ongard. Mali, Dokkoon, and Mek Kapah were nearby and able to see the event taking place.

The newborn is the first calf for Num-Oi, and he is the fourth baby for the Zoo’s fertile bull elephant Bong Su.

According to the keepers and vets, Num-Oi is being a very attentive and supportive first time Mum.

As a valued Zoos Victoria Member, we wanted you to be one of the first to know. We’ll be able to show you photos soon and we can’t wait to welcome you to Melbourne Zoo to see the new arrival!

Please keep your eye on our website for updates.

(By the way, the zebra I’ve been watching for over a year has not ‘dropped’ that big tummy bulge, so I guess it’s just a fat tummy and old age – the same as me – LOL.  This particular zebra is obviously not pregnant at all).

Another very hot day today, so I’m stuck indoors.  Hopefully some more moderate weather next week will make a photography excursion  to the zoo possible to check out the latest addition.

In the meantime, here’s a shot of one of our lovely Koalas, taken last Sept, looking very much like a cheeky furry boy sitting astride the branch of a tree).

    • I’ve never seen a koala astride a tree branch just like this before, Robyn – I took about 5-6 good Koala images that day and this is my favourite. Glad you like it too.

    • So am I Lorri.
The email said the baby elephantwas doing well, so can’t wait to get a photo (having seen a new-born elephant on a Zoo Babies serial on TV just last night – Berlin Zoo I think it was).
What you mean is “Poor Zebra and Poor Vicki ?”. Although perhaps we’re a bit old to be pregnant anyway – we’re more the Grandmotherly Age.
